As Chair of the HyTest Cardiac Marker Award jury, it was an honor for the jury to select and recognize Paul Collinson, MA MB BChir FRCPath MD FACB FRCP edin.EurClinChem, as its first recipient. HyTest generously sponsored the award in celebration of 20 years of achievement in the cardiac disease diagnostics field. Professor Collinson was selected from a group of eight outstanding physician and PhD scientists, whose academic careers have contributed to the past, current and future growth of cardiac biomarkers for utilization to improve diagnostics and risk assessment outcomes in the care of patients.
Professor Collinson, from London in the UK, currently serves as a Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Professor of Cardiovascular Biomarkers at St. George's University of London and St. George’s Healthcare NHS Trust. Paul studied at St Catharines College, Cambridge (Medicine and Biochemistry) and St Thomas Hospital, London. Professor Collinson graduated from St Catherine's College, Cambridge in 1981 and trained at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He was awarded his MD from Cambridge University in 1994. Early in his career, he was a Consultant in Croydon. His doctoral thesis was on the early diagnosis of AMI with subsequent work on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndromes. A special interest of his is in the cost economics of cardiac care and point of care testing.
Professor Collinson introduced and developed cardiac troponin and B type natriuretic testing in the UK and has provided expert advice to the UK National Institute for Health Excellence (NICE) guideline groups for Chest Pain, Chronic and Acute Heart failure. He has worked with National and International cardiac biomarker groups for EFLM and IFCC and worked on National and International audits of cardiac biomarker testing. He was awarded a personal chair as Professor of Cardiovascular Biomarkers in recognition of his achievements in this field. Professor Collinson was part of the team that won the first award of the EFCC Labs are Vital award for Excellence in Outcomes Research in Laboratory Medicine and was recognized as one of the top 100 UK Scientists by the UK Science Council for his work as a Developer/Translational Scientist. Professor Collinson has been recognized by numerous professional organizations over his successful career, including: Fellow: Royal College of Pathologists (1997); Fellow: Royal Society of Medicine (2001); Fellow: National Academy of Clinical Biochemists (2002); President of Pathology section, Royal Society of Medicine (2005-2007); Research excellence award in point of care testing from the AACC (2010); Labs are Vital Award for evidence based laboratory medicine (2011) - Awarded by European Federation of Clinical Chemistry. Professor Collinson has published over 220 papers and review articles, over 240 abstracts and 15 book chapters. Outside of work, Professor Collinson has many passions, including Shakespeare, scuba diving and photographing sharks; especially the ones with big teeth.
